Radio: Mostly recorded at the BBC studios in Birmingham, Manchester and London. Roles range from Roman general Caius Lucius in Shakespeare’s Cymbeline to the county coroner overseeing Nigel Pargetter’s inquest in The Archers (Clip 1, Clip 2) an irascible Irish Priest in Ray Connolly’s romantic comedy God Bless Our Love, an oratorical David Lloyd George in Writing the Century and innocent abroad Fred Melthorpe in Don Haworth’s classic comedy series Oddballs. Leading parts include Cornish inventor Richard Trevethick in A Magnificent Prospect of the Works; Richard de Breto, one of the knights who killed Thomas a Beckett, in Assassins: Anglo Saxon hero Beowulf in Walker in the Night and Guy Montag in an adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s Farenheit 451.

“I’ve a definite soft spot for adaptations of Thomas Hardy’s work, playing native ‘Wessex’ characters in Fiddler of the Reels, as well as Return of the Native, and Two on a Tower. In Neville Teller’s clever adaptation of Richard Adams Watership Down (directed by Peter Leslie Wild) I was part of a large acting ensemble as the militant bunny, Bigwig. A memorable dual role was the Minotaur & General Franco in Guernica, a sound exploration of Picasso’s anti-war masterpiece, by Liz Bond & Peter Warde, directed by Phillip Martin, for Radio 3, which won an International radio award for best drama at New York”.

Additional narrations for Vodaphone staff training programmes (as the voice of a robot) & The Co-operative Group as well as numerous business clients.

Stephen has also voiced various other narrations and historical characters for local authorities, UK museums and internet learning made by Fuzzy Duck, Audiotrails, Ric Mellis Productions, Centrescreen, Laurel North Productions, Mindwave Media & Peter Hughes Video.

For Demi-paradise Stephen developed and directed fellow performers for an annual event at Lancaster Castle, entitled Ghostly Tales . Other live readings include The Apple Store, Stephen’s own pick of the crop of apple related literature, commissioned by Devon growers group Orchards Live. Interact Reading Services: Manchester’s Wythenshawe Hospital Stroke Recovery unit, as a visiting reader on the wards. Since 2018 Stephen has continued to develop and extend live and recorded audio work in conjunction with colleagues at The Border Readers.
